Why Learn Spanish - How to Open Your World

By Paul Wrights

Spanish is the third most commonly spoken language in the world, after English and Chinese. Numbering about 500 million speakers, it is often the second or third language of choice after English. Many people in the United States and Europe are starting to study Spanish. Why should you?

1. Know your neighbors

This used to mean knowing your neighboring countries. Now it's much more literal. More and more Spanish-speaking people are moving into our cities, towns and streets. Knowing Spanish is invaluable in speaking with other residents who don't know English.

2. Cultural expansion

As a person who appreciates art, music and dance, you would be no stranger to Spanish influences. You probably relax to Casals' cello pieces and Segovia's guitar solos. Or move to the rhythms of the mambo, cha-cha, salsa and tango. You could also be taking in the art works of Picasso, Dali, and many others. Knowing how to speak Spanish allows one to have a warmer cultural experience. Furthermore, learning Spanish also opens up a wealth of literature, both modern and traditional.

3. Travel the world

There are over 20 countries where Spanish is spoken as an official or co-official language. It is possible to visit these countries solely using English. But visitors always find their travel experience much richer when they communicate and speak in Spanish. Even if you struggle with the language, the residents will love your attempts. Whether you are travelling in Mexico, Central America or South America, you will have doors opened to you simply because you speak Spanish. You will see and do things that many other visitors do not.

Don't worry if you are not aware of all the different variations of the Spanish language. There are enough similar fundamentals in grammar and vocabulary for everyone to understand each other.

4. Starting point for other languages

Spanish is a Latin-based language. After you learn Spanish, you will realize that you have a head-start in learning other Latin-based languages such as French and Italian. Even if you decide not to learn more languages, you will realize that your command of English has improved. This is usually because you become more aware of language structures while having a determined approach to develop Spanish grammar and vocabulary.

In all, Spanish is the most rewarding foreign language to learn. Truly a great way to open up your world. Start now!
