If you are preparing yourself for a trip abroad, be aware that even if you know only a few words like "s'il vous plait", "merci beaucoup" and "bonjour", "comment allez-vous" the locals appreciate that you do this effort. However, while "knowing just a few words" is a beginning, it is not the ideal. Speaking as a baby in a foreign culture can charm at the beginning, but if you want to explain for example your allergy to antibiotics to a local doctor, by speaking as a baby you will probably be frustrated and you will frustrate the doctor himself. So if you learn to communicate in a foreign language, your goal should be to understand and be understood in most situations likely.
So, how do I know what is enough?
When you feel that you can talk easily about things you normally talk about them with your friends, you probably have enough vocabulary. So don't be satisfied with a small level but have a sufficient level of language helps you communicate in a foreign country.
