Many people interested in how to learn Spanish find themselves very lost in the beginning. I have even had friends who took Spanish when they were in high school, had a base of the language, and had no idea how to progress from there.
Really the best thing you can do in the very beginning is go through some kind of formal education. Either in school (which I do NOT recommend since most schools' methods are very ineffective) or through language learning software, which I HIGHLY recommend since you can move at your own pace and it works very effectively. You will struggle very much without some kind of formal education in the beginning. Without some kind of help, you will eventually grasp on to how the language works, but it will take you YEARS instead of the WEEKS it would normally.
After you have built your base in Spanish, it is good to continue the formal learning, but not as intensely. Use it to build up your vocabulary and for practice. However, at this point, I recommend focusing on IMMERSING yourself in the language.
When you go to a Latin American restaurant, try to order entirely in Spanish. Let the waiter or waitress know that you are learning Spanish and I promise that they will not only be very understanding, but they will be flattered that you want to know their language. Speak with the wait staff only in Spanish.
Try to do this anywhere you go where a Latin American person is working. You will receive some of your best Spanish lessons in this way -- just immersing yourself in the language!
When people ask me how to learn Spanish, I tell them to simply immerse themselves in the language. This is what I did to learn Spanish in under two months, so trust me -- it works!
