A lot of people every day say to themselves, "I want to learn Spanish." Very few take action on that feeling. If most people knew it only took about two months of practice to speak nearly conversationally, then I have a feeling most people wouldn't give up on their dream of learning another language! Let me explain how it is possible to learn Spanish in just a few months.
1. Spend a week or two really studying basic Spanish. I'm talking grammar, sentence structure, and the few absolutely essential words. The best way to do this is with a good piece of Spanish learning software that will immerse you in the language. Audio books in your car will help too -- take advantage of your down time!
2. Start reading in Spanish. Once you have the basics of the language down, look for children's books in Spanish -- either at your library, or online -- and read them. I am not joking! You will learn basic vocabulary and you won't have to translate it because these books are illustrated. Don't worry, you only have to do this for about a week.
3. Speak with others in Spanish. Find friends who speak Spanish and just sit and talk with them for about an hour in Spanish whenever you can. This will be VERY frustrating at first, but after just a week or two, you will surprise yourself with how easily you speak. After two months, you'll be conversational with them!
4. Read newspapers in Spanish. Newspapers are like children's books in that they use very basic language. With a good translation tool by your side, start reading the newspapers, and writing down phrases you don't understand (with their translations). Study these!
Basically you need to build a base and then immerse yourself in the language. Like I said, it will be frustrating at first, but after just two months I guarantee you will be nearly conversational if you dedicate at least one hour a day to it. Buena suerte! (Good luck!)
