Rosetta Stone VS Rocket Chinese - Putting an End to the Debate

By Kip Owens

David vs Goliath

There are a lot of Chinese courses that help people with no experience to learn Chinese. I have tried many different Chinese software courses, some are decent and others, not so good. Two of the most popular Chinese software courses are Rosetta Stone Chinese, and Rocket Chinese. Rosetta Stone is pretty well known for making software for many different foreign languages. Rocket Chinese is new, up-and-coming software course that seems to be gaining a lot of popularity. I have spent a lot of time looking through these two different courses. Read on to learn what I found out.

What is similar?

The lessons and programs themselves seem to be pretty similar. Rosetta Stone offers modules that help you write and spell accurately, build vocabulary and grammar basics. You will learn about sample topics including age, family relations, introductions and greetings, times of day, buying and selling. All of these are accessible with software that runs on your computer. As you graduate from Beginner, you can buy more advanced programs.

Rocket Chinese offers similar features. The offer basically breaks down to 5 different components: 31 audio lessons, 31 grammar lessons, computer games to help you learn and reinforce new vocabulary and verbs, and also a members only forum.

What are the differences?

The most obvious one is price. Rocket Chinese is less than $100, while Rosetta Stone costs $499.00 for all three levels of Chinese. Even though Rosetta Stone is 5x the price, it didn't seem like they had a 5x difference in features and learning experience. After reading different review sites and forum posts, another difference was apparent: Rocket Chinese consistently outranked Rosetta Stone.

Rocket Chinese seems to focus on getting you to speak right away. It has computer games that seem to keep learning Chinese fun, while learning Chinese with Rosetta Stone can become tedious. After going through free trials of both programs, the choice seems obvious.

Which one do you recommend?

Rocket Chinese seems to be a much better value than Rosetta Stone. Unlike most programs I've tried, it doesn't make learning Chinese feel like a lot of work. It keeps things interesting and fun. And it's much less than Rosetta Stone. It comes with a 100% money back, 60 day guarantee, so I don't see how you can lose. If you are serious about learning Chinese, I would recommend really giving Rocket Chinese a try.
