You have probably heard someone try to speak another language and butcher it in the process!
Oftentimes, those people have learned how to speak French, or any other language for that matter, using a text book or a phrase book they picked up at a local store.
That method is fine for acquainting yourself with the written form of a language, but if you want to learn how to speak French you need to hear a native speaker pronounce the words.
Using an audio style instruction method you can listen to the words over and over until they are imprinted in your mind. As children we learn to speak by listening to our parents and imitating the words. Such is the case with a language course that has audio modules as the main component and pictures/reading comprehension as complementary lessons.
If you are able to devote months or years to learning French and the grammatically correct way to construct a sentence, then you may want to consider going to school. But if you want to learn to speak it quickly, you will probably want to examine what other options are open to you.
You can find lessons online and one of the best courses you will find for the money would be provided by Rosetta Stone. They also offer CD-ROMs.
Another alternative is a software package and top of the list in my opinion, is Rocket French. They offer a downloadable version that uses audio and interactive games which make the learning fun as well as effective.
Pimsleur is completely audio based and the ideal choice for someone who needs to learn how to speak French quickly. However it may not be as effective for helping you to learn and retain what you have learned as it lacks the added components offered by the other two options.
