Spanish Language Courses - 5 Available Learning Methods

By Paul Wrights

You are ready to start learning Spanish! And you are eager to jump onto any course that you can get your hands on. But will the course be effective for you? What are the different Spanish learning methods available? Well, we have identified 5 methods for how you can learn Spanish.

1) Language Book Learning Methods

Books have been our source of information and education most of our life. Language learning is similar. Many language learners have successfully developed their language skills through this method of learning. The thing about books is that they range and address all ages and skill levels of learners. In addition to choosing a course book on how to learn Spanish, you should also read anything you can get your hands on. Dictionaries, picture books, novels and magazines are also good supplementary materials for your Spanish development.

2) Audio Media Language Methods

The audio method is the most successful method of learning how to speak Spanish. This is how we learned our own native language as children. It is only natural that learning a new language with its different sounds, vowels, consonants, and rhythms must include an audio component.

With today's technological advances, the audio method is now extremely portable. We can easily carry off our Spanish lessons on CDs. Or move the audio files onto small devices like mp3 players, iPods and even most mobile phones.

3) Book/Audio Combo Methods

Of all the different kinds of language learning methods, the book and audio combination is the most common and versatile. These combine the structured lessons of a Spanish course book with the all-important audio component. While some methods use the older grammar-heavy approach, some newer methods use the more modern immersion approach. All the courses tend to have the Spanish lessons structured around various normal life situations, like greetings, asking for directions and ordering a meal.

4) Software and Internet Methods

Spanish software applications and Internet Methods should be viewed as a different medium, rather than another learning method.

Depending on the publisher, the Spanish software may serve a range of different methods. Fundamentally, the audio method is predominant, where the learner is encouraged to mimic the playback sentences. Voice tone comparisons may be found in more sophisticated programs. The software could also include a visual dictionary, appealing to the visual learner. A new facet that software medium brings is in the form of Interaction. Quizzes and games may be included to enhance the learning experience. Some Spanish programs even track the learner's progress.

Spanish courses online via the Internet can also address various types of learners. While the publisher is usually be more responsive and may provide more dynamic content, the learner is dependent on an Internet connection.

5) Language Classes, Schools and Tutors

Many people opt for this method when a longer term goal is the expectation. It may be a Spanish elective in the university. Perhaps venturing into a new business opportunity in a Spanish community. Or simply migrating or retiring to a Spanish speaking country.

High schools and colleges may have Spanish language courses for students, but there are also avenues out there for adults to take formal language classes. Some community services offer Spanish classes at discounted rates. These tend to be conducted in groups, allowing greater exposure to culture and people. The learning duration may be more extended but a different kind of enrichment is experienced. There are also Spanish language schools and personal tutors. While the learning experience can be more focused, interactive and fun, the disadvantage is that it is usually more expensive.
