In my opinion, this is the only real, effective method of learning Spanish. If you prefer, you can go ahead and be my guest and use traditional classroom based methods but, as you'll soon find out in this article, they are vastly inferior to self study methods.
Polyglots - An Interesting Lesson
Polyglots are people who have learned to speak multiple languages. One of the most famous was Giuseppe Mezzofanti, an Italian who never left his country and yet learned 38 languages!
The key to his success was not a special talent - it was simply a passion for languages. The "secret" to his rapid learning was nothing more than self study techniques. He did not enrol in classroom based lessons.
You Must Learn
Think about it - in a classroom, a teacher has to cater for the learning speeds and difficulties of every student. Do you think that this ever happens in reality?
I remember when I was a language student in a class. I learned nothing there but only when I returned home and read the lesson on my own and in my own time did I actually learn anything.
Audio Lessons
Many around the world including US diplomatic services and others choose self study audio courses for their own workers over any classroom based teaching.
The reason for this is simple.
First of all, audio offers something called organic learning. During audio lessons, a course will evolve - you will learn new words but you will also use words learned before to build new sentences. This recurrence every now and again means that you automatically retain everything you have learned - no need for rote memorization of word lists.
Secondly, no textbooks are involved. You already know how to read and write in at least one language. All you need to do is learn how to speak and listen naturally in another language. Once you can do this, writing and reading become second nature anyway.
