Traditional Methods

To know why audio is so great, we have to look back at the failings of traditional methods. I'm about to expose the fallacy of traditional classroom-based learning methods.

The humble textbook. Think about it - through learning at school you have a textbook for every subject. It is automatically assumed that textbooks should also be extended to language learning. But why should it be? Where is the proof for this? There is none. In fact, textbooks encourage rote memorization which is not a good way to learn a language.

You're probably also used to learning the same things at the beginning of any language course. Things such as "I live in..." or "which way to the..." or "my job is...". These types of phrases might be useful if you want a party piece to impress a few numbskulls but they won't actually teach you much about the language itself or how to use it! Think about it - are these the phrases that a small child first starts to use?

I touched on memorization earlier. It is common as a learning method in schools. It's a great way of passing an examination but everyone knows that if you memorize something then you quickly forget it after the exam. This is the same for learning Spanish.

Learn Spanish Audio Courses

First of all, Spanish audio courses do not need a textbook. Some of them might include a transcript or a small accompanying text but it is definitely not necessary whatsoever to even peek at it. The advantage of the audio method is that you speak and hear the language. Think about people who cannot read and write. When we all learn our first language, it is through hearing and seeing - it is not through reading or writing.

Spanish audio courses do not rely on learning corny phrases. The better way to learn is through what is called "organic" or progressive learning. This is where you hear someone speak Spanish, you repeat it, check that you have said it correctly and then are further challenged by being asked to produce new sentences based on what you have learned already. By formulating your own sentences in your head - this is when a language is really learned - and again you can check your formulated sentence against the native speaker to see if you are correct.

Memorization? Forget about it! You can even learn Spanish by audio when in the car if you want. You most certainly do not need to memorize anything. The best way to memorize something is not in a list but in a context.
