ESL Jobs - Where to Find Them and What to Look For

By Kelvin Nikkel

Are you planning on starting a new occupation as an ESL teacher? Don't know where to find ESL jobs? Well, in this article, you are going to hear about various ways in which you will effectively be able to locate many of the ESL positions available around the world. Also included in this article are resources to help you start your search and the things you should be looking for within that position.

If you are planning on teaching ESL close to home, then one of your best places to look would be in your local newspaper. There are usually a multitude of ESL jobs listed in larger populated areas. You could also check on the internet at the resources listed below to see if they cover your area. Some will but most will only cover specific areas in certain regions. The other way you can find local ESL jobs is to do a search in Google, Yahoo or MSN search engines by simply typing in "esl jobs (your area)" WITH the quotes. This will pull up most of the positions that would be advertised on the internet for you. Not planning on teaching ESL locally? How would you find the position overseas? Let's take a look...

So you want to have an adventure while teaching ESL. Getting an ESL teaching job overseas is an excellent way to see the world and have it funded while you are doing it. I personally went to Asia and taught for 3 years and my teaching positions in China and Thailand more than supplemented my cost of living in both countries. Many thousands of people from all walks of life are overseas teaching ESL and there is STILL a HUGE demand for more. There are literally THOUSANDS of positions advertised daily on various websites for all countries. Asia, mainly China, would have the greatest demand.

To find these positions, check out the resources I have listed below...

esljobs.com (jobs around the world)

esljobsworld.com (jobs around the world)

eslemployment.com (jobs around the world)

tefl.net/esl-jobs (jobs around the world)

eslcafe.com (Daves ESL Café - Listings of jobs around the world but mainly Asia)

anesl.com (ESL jobs in China and Taiwan only)

marksesl.com (jobs around the world)

esljobfind.com (jobs around the world)

englishjobmaze.com (jobs around the world)

englishjobs.biz (jobs around the world)

However you do the search on the internet for "esl jobs" without the quotes, there are well over 500,000 listings of sites to check out. The ones mentioned above are the top 10 and the ones that I personally recommend. Now that you have found the ESL job that you would like to get, I bet you are wondering what I meant by "What To Look For"?

There are many things to check out before committing yourself to any one position. Here are some very important things to watch for:

1. Is the position in the country you would like to visit?

2. Do you want to teach in the country or the city?

3. Does the institution cover the cost of your housing/food/transportation?

4. Does the institution cover your flight or reimburse your flight costs before or after your contract is finished?

5. How many hours per week will you be expected to teach?

6. Are you living on or off campus?

7. Are your accommodations shared or private?

8. What is your compensation for overtime?

9. What qualifications do you need and do you have them? (IE: TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, etc...)

10. MOST OF ALL...What is your pay?

There are a lot more things to be aware of but these are the most important ones. Be sure to compare several positions available and what each of their contracts state before signing on the dotted line. Many teachers have ended up taking positions that have turned into nightmares. This could be disastrous when you are in a foreign country with no where to turn. Do your homework and be sure to get a position that you will be happy with.

Teaching ESL overseas is definitely an experience to be had by anyone interested and qualified to do. Having all the heads up and resources at your disposal only makes it that much more enjoyable and a lot easier. Want to have all this information at your fingertips?
