How Hard is it to Pick Up a Second Language?

By Samantha Asher

If you can learn a language and speak it fluently within six months of studying one or two hours a day, you must have an amazing mind and a knack for languages. Most people can't learn a language that quickly. Still, some people can pick up a language faster and more easily than others.

How will I know if I can pick up a language quickly or if it will be hard for me? The easiest way to find out is to start studying, but there are ways to give you a hint as to how it will go for you. How did you learn in school? Did you pick things up quickly or did you constantly find yourself struggling to learn? If you struggled in grade school, there is a big possibility that language learning won't come easy for you, but this doesn't mean it will be impossible for you. You learned English, right? If you are reading this, it means you can learn a language, it just might take a little longer than others. Even if you had trouble in school, how you do with languages has more to do with how you learn.

What kind of learner are you? Are you a visual learner or do you prefer reading or listening to a lecture? If you are good at all kinds of learning, you will have no problem picking up a second language. If you are mostly a visual learner, you will do well with visual programs such as software programs. If you prefer lecture and listening, you will do better with an audio program. Do you prefer reading and seeing the written word? Read and translate books in your target language.

Ideally, you will use all of these types of learning tools to ensure you build all parts of a language including listening, reading, wreaking, writing, and comprehension. Use them all but focus more effort on the ones you do well with to get the most enjoyment and quickest results out of your language learning effort.
